Wilson reclaims sole possession of second place in the CPL East division with a 8-6 victory over the Crystal Coast Booty Divers – Morehead City’s Alter Ego – on Wednesday night.
The game was deemed the CPL Game of the Night and it did not disappoint. The Tobs (19-13) were led offensively by Chase Waddell, who clubbed his fifth and sixth home runs of the season. Matthew Williams and Jack Kail each had a pair of runs driven in, and the Tobs had over 20 hitters reach base safely.
Matthew Rivers (1-0) got the start and pitched the first five innings brilliantly. Rivers ran into trouble in the sixth, but the Tobs bullpen was able to preserve the Tobs’ lead. Morehead City (19-15) was never able to get within two, thanks to strong outings out of the pen from Dylan Maire, Ethan Wilford and Ethan Atchley.
After running out to a 5-0 lead, the Tobs added some much needed insurance with a SAC Fly from Kail and Williams with an RBI groundout in the 7th and an RBI single in the 9th. The Tobs were active on the bases in the late innings, stealing four bases in the final three frames – including Carter Murphy’s first stolen base in a regular season game since high school.
The Tobs finish their road trip with back-to-back wins, leaving them in 2nd in the East standings.
The Tobacconists are back home on Thursday for St. Paddy’s Day in July at Historic Fleming Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
