WILSON, NC – The Wilson Tobs hosted the Holly Springs Salamanders on Tuesday night inside of Historic Fleming Stadium for game two of the second half of the CPL season. In a back-and-forth contest, the Tobs improved to 2-0 in the second half of the season, walking off the Salamanders and winning 8-7.
Wilson got the scoring started at the beginning of the game. Hits from four consecutive hitters in the bottom of the first for the Tobs saw two runners cross the plate to give Wilson an early 2-0 lead.
It took until the fourth frame for the Salamanders to produce a response. Holly Springs plated three runs in the top of the fourth to take its first lead of the ball game at 3-2.
Both teams continued to trade blows as the contest wore on. After falling behind by a second run in the top of the fifth, the Tobs answered with a run of their own in the home half of the frame to keep the deficit at just a singular run.
Two runs in both the seventh and the eight for Wilson momentarily put the Tobs up 7-4 heading into the ninth inning.
In the top of the ninth, Holly Springs rattled off three runs against Tobs reliever Sebastian Kahn to tie up the ball game at 7-7. Brett Anderson came in to collect the final out of the frame, sending the game to the bottom of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jack Kail led of the inning with a single. Mackenzie Wainwright and Jared Beebe each earned consecutive walks to load the bases for Cole Robinson with nobody out in the ninth.
With no place to put Robinson, the Tobs’ first baseman was plunked by an inside fastball, forcing the winning run across the plate for Wilson, as the Tobs came away with the 8-7 victory.
The Tobs are next in action on Thursday night at 7 p.m. ET at Historic Fleming Stadium to take on Chinese-Taipei.
