WILSON, N.C. – The Wilson Tobs (10-9, 6-9 CPL) split a doubleheader with the Wilmington Sharks (8-7 CPL) with a walk-off 6-5 win in game two on Saturday night at Historic Fleming Stadium.

Game one was a continuation of the contest on June 12 between the Sharks and Tobs in Wilmington that was suspended by rain in the bottom of the 1st. While game one had to be played until the full completion of nine innings, game two was a 7-inning contest.

Game 1

Tobs starting pitcher Jake Lewis (Eastern Kentucky) picked up where he left off on June 12 when play resumed resumed with the Sharks as the home team in game one.

With one out in the bottom of the 1st and runners at second and third base, Wilmington designated hitter Rece Sabo (Ohio Valley) plated John Behrends (Belmont) on a groundout to extend the Sharks lead to 3-0.

The Sharks put up three more runs in the 4th inning on two hits, two walks and a Logan Keller (Navy) error to take a 6-0 lead.

Wilson got on the board in the top of the 7th to trail 6-1 when Keller drove in James Arakawa (Pacific) on an error charged to Sharks shortstop Taber Mongero (UNC-Wilmington). A few batters later, Drew DeVine (Western Michigan) drove a two-RBI single to left field to cut Wilmington’s lead in half, 6-3.

Behrends added an insurance run for the Sharks in the bottom of the 7th on a two out RBI double that put them up 7-3.

Maximillian Alba (UNC) shut down the Tobs in the 8th and 9th innings with 2.0 scoreless frames to secure the win 7-3 for Wilmington.

Sharks starting pitcher Josh Harlow (Mercer) pitched well dealing 6.0 shutout innings on four strikeouts on way to receiving the win. The Tobs were able to pick up five hits and three walks off Harlow, but stranded eight base runners through the first six frames.

Lewis received the loss for the Tobs allowing six runs, one earned, on six hits in 6.0 innings pitched. He finished his start with five strikeouts.

Game 2

The Tobs took an early 3-0 lead in game two on four hits off Sharks starting pitcher Andy Bean (Belmont). DeVine led off the frame reaching second base on a wild pitch after being put on board by an error on Wilmington third baseman Zack Budzik (UNC-Greensboro). With one out, Dylan Scaranda (Barton College) hit his team leading third homerun of the season to right field, plating DeVine, and the Tobs led 2-0. Brainy Rojas (East Stroudsburg) capped off the scoring in the first with an RBI single that scored Zach Hogueisson (Tennessee Wesleyan).

Wilmington scored twice in the 3rd inning off Tobs starting pitcher Paul Sullivan (Iona) to trail 3-2.

Hogueisson led off the bottom of the 3rd with a solo homerun to give the Tobs the advantage 4-2.

The Sharks tied the game 4-4 with a two-run top of the 4th inning on a two RBI single by Chaz Bertolani (Lipscomb) and took their first lead of game two in the 5th, 5-4, on a Alec Makarewicz (East Carolina) RBI single.

Hoguession went yard again in the 5th inning to tie the game 5-5 on his third homerun of the season and second “Hulk smash” of the night.

Nolan DeVos (Davidson) struck out the side in the top of the 7th after reliving Carlos Rey (Nova Southeastern) who pitched 2.1 innings in relief on five strikeouts. Rey allowed one run on two hits and two walks.

Tobs centerfielder Jared Carr (Shepherd) hit a walk-off homerun to win if for Wilson, 6-5, in the bottom of the 7th on the first pitch of the frame thrown by Sharks relief pitcher Jacob Grzebinski (Georgetown). Grzebinski took the loss after pitching a scoreless 6th frame.

DeVos earned the win in game two for the Tobs pitching 1.0 innings on three Ks.

Bean ended the night allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits. He struck out four Tobs in 3.0 innings pitched.

Sullivan, in his first start, pitched 3.2 innings allowing four runs on four hits and one walk.

Hogueisson finished game two going 3-3 on a double, two homeruns, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Wilson finishes the weekend with a game against the Peninsula Pilots on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. ET. Fans can join the Tobs for Cash Saver Sunday presented by StateFarm Jana Lake on Father’s Day.
