Wilson, N. C. – The Tobs rolled on Sunday night at Historic Fleming Stadium.

In front of a packed house of 3,500, the Tobs (1-0) beat the Fuquay-Varina Twins 9-0 in their first exhibition game of the season.

It was a balanced effort on the mound for Wilson, who threw a different pitcher in each of the nine innings, none of whom allowed a run. In fact, the Tobs only allowed two hits in the entire contest.

Braxton Stewart (1-0) got the start and did not allow a run, Matthew Rivers earned the W. Josh Wise had three punchouts in the sixth inning. Casey O’Dell was handed the ball in the 9th and delivered a scoreless frame, striking out two, including the game’s final out.

Offensively, the story was the Twins’ mistakes. With six errors, seven walks and five hit-by-pitches – along with numerous past balls and wild pitches – the Tobs had traffic on the basepaths all game. Evan Harding and Charley Bussey led the way offensively, each with a pair of hits. Harding had a stolen base, drove in a run and scored once. Bussey scored twice, one from first on an errant pick-off throw in the 8th to give the Tobs their 9th run.

The Tobs are back in action at Historic Fleming Stadium on Tuesday against the Virginia Beach Valor, their second exhibition game before the Coastal Plain League season opens Thursday vs the Tri City Chili Peppers. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 7:00 PM.

Head coach Ted Bergquist expects another hodge podge of pitchers on $2 Tuesday night to get all of the arms ready for the CPL season.
