WILSON, N.C. – Despite Anton Lazits’ 2-for-4 night at the plate with a solo home run, the Wilson Tobs (25-23, 11-13) saw their season come to a close in a 8-4 loss at the hands of the Florence Flamingos (20-26, 10-12) on Saturday evening at Historic Fleming Stadium.
Paired with the Wilmington Sharks’ 6-5 victory over the Morehead City Marlins, the loss officially concludes the Tobs’ 2023 campaign, with Wilson just narrowly missing a spot in the Petitt Cup Playoffs for the second consecutive summer.
The scoring got started early on for the Tobs on Saturday night. Following a Dylan Robertson solo home run to give Florence an early 1-0 advantage, an AJ Jones RBI groundout that was paired with a Carson Garner throwing error put Wilson on top in just the first frame.
Flash forward to the fourth, after the Flamingos tied the ballgame up at two, a Seth Gergely RBI single put the Tobs back in front. It wouldn’t last long, though, as Florence put up a four-spot in the top of the fifth, and wouldn’t look back from there.
Though Lazits’ solo shot kept it close, the Flamingos’ bullpen was able to shut down the Tobs order, with Wilson falling for the fourth consecutive contest, and seeing their season come to a close.
The Tobs will now turn their attention to 2024, when the black and yellow will once against suit up at Historic Fleming Stadium.
