WILSON, N.C. – Despite Matthew Cooper’s 2-for-4 day with a solo home run and two RBIs, the Wilson Tobs (17-12, 3-2) fell to the Holly Springs Salamanders (15-16, 4-3) for the third consecutive time in an 8-7 loss on Tuesday evening at Historic Fleming Stadium.
The defeat moves the Tobs to 3-3 this season against Holly Springs, with still three more contests remaining.
The scoring all got started in the home half of the first. The Cooper solo home run quickly made it a 1-0 ballgame, and after Holly Springs countered a strikeout-wild pitch turned into two runs scoring to make it 3-1 at the end of two. A Cooper RBI double later once again gave the Tobs a one-run advantage and made it a 4-3 contest in the bottom half of the third, but a five-spot in the sixth for Holly Springs pushed the Salamanders out to an 8-4 lead.
It’s a lead Holly Springs wouldn’t relinquish, as even with the Tobs pulling closer, Wilson left the bases loaded and the tying run in scoring position in back-to-back frames, and never could recover.
Looking to rebound, the Tobs now turn their sights to the Morehead City Marlins for a 7:00 p.m. ET first pitch for Thirsty Thursday at Historic Fleming Stadium. Those still looking to purchase tickets can do so through showpass at wilsontobs.com.
