In their fourth meeting of the young season, the Tri City Chili Peppers were able to even up the season series with the Wilson Tobs. The Tobs fell in the bottom of the 9th to the Chili Peppers, losing 4-3 at Shepard Stadium in Colonial Heights, VA.
The game was delayed over 90 minutes, and finally got started a little after 8:30 p.m. ET.
Offensively, it was Jerry Barnes and Charlie Bussey III who led the way for the Tobs (3-2). Barnes had a pair of run scoring hits, each time driving in Bussey III — who reached base in all four of his plate appearances.
Braxton Stewart got the start and turned in his best outing to date. Stewart pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out eight. The Tobs ran into some trouble in the 6th. Jason Fink followed Stewart on the mound and only recorded one out before Mathew Mariano took over with the bases loaded. Five walks between the two relievers gave the Chili Peppers (4-4) a 3-2 lead. As a pitching staff, the Tobs issued nine free passes, only allowing two hits through the game’s first eight frames.
After Barnes’ second RBI hit tied things at three, the Tobs gave the ball to Casey O’Dell (0-1) to get the game to extras.
Jaeden Carter pinch hit and set the table with a leadoff single. Then Zion Taylor snuck a ball barely inside the left field line to drive home Carter for the game winning run.
The Tobbaconists are back in action Saturday on the road against the Peninsula Pilots, first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, Wilson gets its first look at last season’s CPL Champs, the Wilmington Sharks. It’ll be For the Love of the Game Night at Historic Fleming Stadium, doors open at 5:00 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. game time.
