WILSON, N.C. – Led by Matthew Cooper’s 3-for-5 day at the plate with a solo home run and two RBIs, the Wilson Tobs (16-11, 2-1) picked up a big-time 8-3 victory over the Peninsula Pilots (12-16, 3-1) on Saturday evening at Historic Fleming Stadium.
The win marked Wilson’s third this season against Peninsula, and its second win in the second half of play in the Coastal Plain League. The Tobs utilized a three-run second to light a spark early on, with a Brian Fry RBI double and Rafe Perich sacrifice fly leading the way.
After the Pilots struck back for a run in the top of the fifth, the Cooper solo homer once again put Wilson on top by three, and the Tobs wouldn’t look back from there. Despite Peninsula cutting the deficit to one after a nearly two-hour lightning delay, a four-spot in the eighth put the game away, with Wilson earning the five-run victory.
Up next for the Tobs, a trip to Colonial Heights, Va. to take on Tri-City Chili Peppers for at Shepherd Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
