Holly Springs, N.C. – The Tobs (7-5) fell 4-1 to the Holly Springs Salamanders (6-5) at Ting Stadium.
The Salamanders scored first off a fielder’s choice in the third. A solo home run from them in the next inning brought their lead up to 2-0.
Jerry Barnes responded with a leadoff single. Then, was driven home by Charlie Bussey’s single, cutting the Manders lead in half (2-1).
Matthew Williams, Chase Waddell, and Jack Kail also picked up hits but were unable to capitalize. Waddell went 2 for 2 with three walks, demonstrating once again how good his plate discipline has been.
Another home run from the Salamanders put them up to 4-1 after five, proving to be the final runs scored from either team.
However, the Tobs never gave up. In the sixth, Waddell walked, Carter Murphy was hit by a pitch, and Thad Ector singled. On defense, Kail and Barnes turned a crucial double play to get out of the seventh inning.
Waddell doubled in the eighth followed by a walk from Ector. Bussey singled once again in the ninth and advanced on an error. Then Waddell was intentionally walked, but left stranded as Holly Spring’s pitching got the best of the Tobs.
On the mound for the Tobacconists, Jacob Dienes shined. After the Salamanders’ four runs, he was able to shut them down. Dienes went three innings only allowing one hit, with one walk and one strikeout.
