WILSON, N.C. – The Wilson Tobs (12-10, 8-10 CPL) jumped ahead early on the Morehead City Marlins (12-6) on Thursday night to win 5-2 at Historic Fleming Stadium.

The Tobs drew first blood by plating four runs in the 3rd inning to lead 4-0. With two outs, Jared Carr (Shepherd) started the scoring on an RBI base hit. Gary Mattis (Shepherd) followed by drawing a walk off Marlins starting pitcher Jared Kollar (Seaton Hill) to load the bases. Kollar then issued a bases loaded walk to Drew DeVine (Western Michigan) that put the Tobs up 2-0. Riley Jepson (UT-Tyler) capped off the scoring with a two-RBI double that extended Wilson’s lead to four runs.

With help from his defense, Wilson starter Cameron Prayer (Houston) pitched a shutout through the 5th inning for the Tobs. However, in the top of the 6th, Prayer allowed Morehead City to get on the board to trail 4-1 on a Phillip Glasser (Youngstown State) sacrifice fly that plated Dominick Bucko (Youngstown State).

Carr led off the bottom of the 7th by hitting a 371-foot homerun to left field that extended Wilson’s lead back to four, 5-1.

The Marlins capitalized on a two-out Tobs error in the top of the 8th to chip away at Wilson’s lead to trail 5-2. Carr committed the error in centerfield that allowed Jack Harris (Newberry College) to reach first base and Glasser made the Tobs pay by hitting an RBI double.

Tobs reliever Dawson Smith (Kaskaskia College) slammed the door in the 9th on his fourth strikeout of the night to earn the save in 2.0 innings pitched. Smith allowed one run that was unearned on three hits.

Prayer picked up the win allowing one run on two hits in 6.0 innings pitched. By the end of the night, he struck out five Marlins.

Kollar allowed four runs on five hits and two walks to finish the night. He pitched 4.0 innings and struck out nine batters on way to taking the loss.

Carr finished the night 2-4 with a homerun, two RBIs, a stolen base and two runs scored.
