HAMPTON, Va. – The Wilson Tobs (11-10, 7-10 CPL) beat the first-place CPL East Division Peninsula Pilots (14-3) by a score of 14-5 on Monday night at War Memorial Stadium.

The Tobs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning on sacrifice flies hit by Garry Mattis (Tennessee Wesleyan) and Zach Hogueisson (Tennessee Wesleyan).

Riley Jepson (UT-Tyler) hit a solo homerun to lead off the 2nd inning to extend Wilson’s lead to 3-0. Later in the frame, Dylan Scaranda (Barton College) doubled in Braedon Blackford (Purdue-Ft. Wayne) to increase the Tobs lead to four runs.

The Pilots responded in the bottom of the 2nd with one run scored off an error charged to Drew DeVine (Western Michigan) to trail 4-1.

Peninsula cut the Tobs lead in half to trail 4-2 off Wilson starting pitcher Darren Williams (Eastern Kentucky) when Alden Mathes (Richmond) drove in a run on a base hit.

The Tobs exploded for four runs in the 6th inning to take an 8-2 lead on an RBI single by Jared Carr (Shepherd) and a three-run homerun to left field off the bat of Mattis.

Peninsula plated three runs on a single and an error on Tobs pitcher Justin Guidos (East Stroudsburg) in the 7th to trail 8-5.

Wilson put the game out of reach on a five-run 8th inning to lead 13-5 that featured RBI hits by Mattis, DeVine and Jepson.

In the 9th inning, DeVine drove in Blackford to put the Tobs up 14-5 on way to securing their first win of the season over Peninsula.

Williams earned the win for the Tobs pitching 6.0 innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and recorded two strikeouts.

Daniel Cole (Lamar) took the loss for the Pilots allowing four runs on five hits in 3.0 innings pitched.

DeVine earned Coastal Plain League nightly honors on his 5-6 performance including two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs.

The Wilson Tobs enter their 25th season as a founding member of the Coastal Plain League. The upcoming season for the Tobs will see community outreach, increased participation in helping the less fortunate, a Pettit Cup Championship team, and more exciting entertainment than ever before.
