The 2024 CPL regular season has come to a close, with the Wilson Tobs just barely missing out on the playoffs.

Finishing 0.5 games back of the Wilmington Sharks for the second and final playoff spot this season, the Tobs’ 2024 season was filled with many highlights.

Wilson began the season in dominant fashion, winning eight of its first nine games. The Tobs, led by an explosive offense and a handful of electric arms got out to an early lead in the CPL’s East Division to start the first half of the season.

Throughout the rest of the first half of the regular season, the Tobs held onto a slim lead in the East Division, as they looked to clinch a first half playoff berth.

Losing two of their final three games to close the first half of the season, the Tobs narrowly missed out on a playoff spot in the first half of the season – the top four teams were all separated by just a singular game.

The second half of the season began in similar fashion to how the first half did.

Wilson got out to a strong start, winning its first five games of the second half behind an onslaught of offense.

From then on out however, the Tobs would struggle to string together wins.

Wilson’s second half of the CPL season was marred by weather and inconsistent play, as the Tobs quickly found themselves on the outside looking in at the playoff race.

Despite the Tobs’ mid-July struggles, Wilson still managed to position themselves a game out of the CPL East Division’s second playoff sot with just a week to play.

Once again however, mother nature struck, canceling two of the Tobs’ last three games.

Unable to fight for their spot in the playoffs due to rain outs, Wilson missed out on the playoffs despite a season finale over the Greenville Yard Gnomes.

All told, the Tobs finished with the third-best record in the CPL in 2024, with a number of players boasting phenomenal individual campaigns.

Infielder Jack Jail – who was one of five all-stars for the Tobs this year – finished the season as the East Division’s leader in batting average (.365) and the CPL leader in doubles (16). Kail was one of the many bright spots all season long for the Tobs.

Slugging outfielder Mackenzie Wainwright was also named an all-star this summer. He finished the season tied for the CPL lead with 11 home runs on the year. Wainwright also finished the year seventh in the league in RBIs with 32.

First baseman Cole Robinson was one of the best power hitters all season long as well. Robinson mashed seven long balls on the year, finishing tied for fifth amongst all CPL players.

Barton College catcher Chase Waddell, the third offensive player selected to the 2024 All-Star game for the Tobs paced all CPL East Division catchers in batting average this season, hitting .311 on the year.

On the mound, two-time CPL All-Star Reese Miller dazzled once more.

One of just six players in the league to collect fives wins on the year, Miller led the league in strikeouts (54) and finished third in the league in ERA (1.47).

Jonah Milchuk is the fifth and final Tob that was selected to the all-star game in 2024. Milchuk finished the summer with a 2.57 ERA, good enough for fifth in the CPL.

Finishing the 2024 summer with a 25-19 record, the Tobs will be back in action at Fleming Stadium in the summer of 2025 for more fun at the ballpark.
