Wilson, N.C. – The TaterHogs’ couldn’t complete the comeback against Wilmington Sharks on Thursday night.
The Sharks (5-5) struck first with a four run first inning. The Hogs were unable to respond until Jack Kail came to the plate in the second. His sacrifice fly brought home Levi McAlister.
In the fourth, the Sharks attacked again with three runs and again with two in the fifth.
In a game the Hogs (7-4) once trailed 10-2, they were able to ignite a rally in the late innings. Seven runs across the final three innings had the go-ahead runner on base in the bottom of the 9th – but the late-inning magic seemed to run out at Historic Fleming stadium, at least for now.
Kail was 1-4 with a pair of sacrifice flies and 2 RBIs and a run scored, but a swinging strikeout in the last of the ninth took the air out of the TaterHogs sails a bit.
Chase Waddell tallied three hits, including a towering homer in the 9th.
On the mound the TaterHogs did not fare as well. Josh Wise and Grady Booth pitched the final 4.1 innings and allowed just one run combined to keep the game in range for the TaterHogs’ late rally that ultimately fell short.
Wilson plays Friday night against Holly Springs at 6:30 before hosting the Salamanders on Saturday for Star Wars night at Historic Fleming Stadium. You can catch the TaterHogs back in action on June 22nd for Homerun 4 Hunger.
