Avant leads Tobs to fourth straight win

(Holly Springs, N.C.) – The Wilson Tobs remained perfect against the East division with a 7-6 final over the Holly Springs Salamanders. Wilson is 10-0 against teams from the East this season.

For the fifth straight game, Wilson jumped on the board in the first inning. Back-to-back walks to De'Andre Pitts and Jared Carr eventually led to runs. Christian Avant doubled home both runs with a lined shot into the right center field alleyway. Avant later scored on an error to give the Tobs a 3-0 lead.

Sebastian Martinez made his first start of the season in his tenth appearance on the mound. After working around two base runners in the first, the right hander surrendered a double and homer to begin the second inning. Nick Lucky's first home run of the season got Holly Springs within one, 3-2.

Wilson tacked a run on in the fifth. Kevin Jordan's team best fifth triple of the season plated Marquise Lanier. They also added another with Reese Farmer's first RBI with the Tobs in the fifth to extend their lead to 5-2.

Holly Springs came back with a vengeance in the bottom of the seventh inning, plating four runs, all coming across with two outs. The rally was keyed by a two-run single from Jake Holtzapple that gave the Salamanders a 6-5 advantage for their first lead of the night.

The Tobs responded quickly to regain the lead in the eighth. Avant brought home two more runs with a single into center with two outs and Wilson jumped back in front 7-6. Taylor Soper allowed two runners to reach in the ninth, but locked down his second save in as many opportunities.

Aside from the four runs allowed in the seventh, Wilson's combination of Vinny Puma, Steven Worley, Josh Arnold and Soper combined for five shutout innings out of the bullpen with one walk and six strikeouts. Alex Hart (1-0) took the win with Andrew Tillery (0-2) surrendering the eighth inning rally for his second loss. The Tobs have won four straight games and have yet to lose since the All-Star Break.

Wilson is home for back-to-back games starting on July 16 against the Peninsula Pilots. It's All You Can Eat Tuesday and Trivia Night at Fleming Stadium. The evening's festivities are brought to you by Da Bayou Restaurant. Tickets and details are available at
