(Martinsville, V.A.) – The Wilson Tobs fell to the Martinsville Mustangs on Friday night. Wilson scored three unanswered runs but their comeback proved to be just too short.
Martinsville tagged Tobs starter Chandler Coates in the bottom of the first. Three straight singles loaded the bases with one out. A grounder to Chris Meyers at first got the runner out at home, but the return throw to first plated two as the ball sailed over the mitt and into right field. Jack Capobianco singled home the third run for a 3-0 advantage.
Marquise Lanier didn't take long to respond. On the first pitch of the second inning, Lanier launched a solo home run over the 400 foot centerfield wall. His second homer of the season got Wilson on the board, but the Mustangs put up three more runs in the second, all with two outs and four straight hits for a 6-1 lead.
Meyers led off the top of the fourth with a deep solo home run to right field. It was his second homer of the season with both of them coming at Hooker Field. The Tobs got another run back on a throwing error in the fifth to score De'Andre Pitts. Tobs trailed 6-3 before a lightening delay halted the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. It lasted fifty-five minutes before the game resumed at 9:50 PM.
Wilson continued to inch closer into the game. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Kevin Jordan doubled and was promptly plated by Pitts for his tenth RBI of the season. The two out mini rally brought the Tobs within two at a 6-4 deficit. Wilson's offense fell silent in the final three innings as they couldn't get runners around. The Tobs fell by that final as Coates (1-2) would take his second loss of the year after two innings of work.
The next Tobs home game is on July 11 against the Asheboro Copperheads. It's a Thirsty Thursday and BB&T Fan Fanatic Cash Giveaway. Thirsty Thursday specials include $1 Select Beer, Draft Beer Specials and Discount Fountain Drinks. Tickets and details are available on WilsonTobs.com.
