Gilmore cruises as Lanier homers for Tobs victory

(Asheboro, N.C.) – The Wilson Tobs battled back late for a 7-2 victory over the Asheboro Copperheads on Tuesday night. Marquise Lanier launched a two-run go-ahead home run as a part of a four-run eighth inning to lift the Tobs to victory.

The Tobs sent Jacob Gilmore out to the hill to make his third start of the season. The left-hander dazzled in his first career outing against the Copperheads. Dustin Baber tagged Gilmore early for a solo home run to give Asheboro a 1-0 lead in the first, but Gilmore cleaned up after. The south paw struck out seven over five innings, allowing just two hits.

Wilson grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Kevin Jordan doubled home Chris Meyers to tie the game at one. Lanier then doubled home the go-ahead run in Jordan for a 2-1 advantage. The Copperheads tied the game once more with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Morrison plated Jonathan Martin with a single into right.

In the top of the eighth, Wilson's third baseman De'Andre Pitts drew a leadoff walk against reliever Ben Harris. Lanier came to the plate and unloaded a moonshot home run to left field, giving Wilson a two-run lead. Lanier was re-added to the roster earlier in the day after a shortened stint with the Independent League Utica Unicorns. The Tobs plated two more for a 6-2 lead.

Wilson got one more and locked it down on the hill the rest of the way. The Tobs defeated the Copperheads in their only scheduled trip to McCrary Park this season by a final of 7-2. Taylor Soper (4-0) threw the seventh inning and took the win. Harris (0-1) gave up four earned over two thirds of an inning and suffered the loss. Wilson's magic number to clinch the first half northern division championship is three. The second place Edenton Steamers were idle on Tuesday.

Wilson has their first off day in nine days on Wednesday. They have completed a stretch of twelve games in nine days, going 5-7 during the stretch. The Tobs are back at Fleming Stadium on Thursday night to host the Peninsula Pilots at 7:15 PM. It's EmergeOrtho and Host Family Appreciation Night as well as Thirsty Thursday with $1 select beer, draft beer specials and discount fountain drinks. There will also be a pregame Farm to Field Farmer's Market. Tickets are available online and at the Tobs box office on gamedays.
