Tobs push streak to five with extra inning win

(Morehead City, N.C.) – The Wilson Tobs stole their first extra inning win of the season by a 2-1 final over the Morehead City Marlins on Friday night. The Tobs mustered just two hits in the contest, but both led to their pair of runs.

Wilson's scoring started in the first. Jared Carr touched home on an aggressive base running play. Standing on second, Chris Meyers rolled a ground ball to second with the throw going to first. Carr never broke stride and forced a throw to the plate. The throw was off line as Carr slid in with the game's first run.

Chandler Coates went to work in the first. After Jordan Schulefand reached on an error, Coates induced a double play. Coates faced the minimum through four innings, striking out two while picking up two double plays and picking off a runner at first. It took five innings for the Marlins to get their first runner to second base.

The 'Fish' tied the game in the six. On a bunt attempt, Coates threw the ball away to first allowing Colby Johnson to score. The game stayed tied at one into the tenth inning.

With Coastal Play League pace of play rules in effect, the Tobs started the tenth with runners on first and second. After a fielder's choice, Shamoy Christopher drove in his first run of the year with a single to right, scoring Hunter Gore.  CJ Gonzalez got a double play ball in the bottom of the inning followed by a lineout to second. The reliever threw just two pitches in the frame to seal the win. At one point, Wilson did not garner a hit through nine full innings. Carr's single in the first came with one out and Christopher's game-winning single came with one out in the tenth. The Tobs have now won five straight games.

Gonzalez (1-0) earned his first win in two shutout innings. Marlins' reliever Cal Hehnke (0-1) surrendered the run in the tenth and was handed the loss. Wilson has a Coastal Plain League record of 8-1.
