Wilson, N.C .– The Wilson Tobs are happy to announce that the team will be welcoming two North Carolina natives to the Tobs this summer season. Nolan DeVos (Davidson College), and Will Schomberg (Davidson College) will look to make an impact on the mound at Historic Fleming Stadium this summer.

Nolan DeVos, the Cabarrus County native is in his sophomore year at Davidson College and making quite the name for himself. The right hander has earned the closer role with the Wildcats and has not disappointed. In his team leading 15 appearances, Nolan is 3-0 with 7 saves directly impacting 10 of the 19 wins for the 19-14 Wildcats so far this spring. As a freshman for Davidson in the shortened 2020 season, DeVos made 6 appearances striking out 10 in 10 innings of work holding hitters to a .184 batting average against. He continued to bully the strike zone last summer in the SCBL for the Mooresville Spinners averaging 16.5 strikeouts per 9 innings in his 10 appearances, which included 2 starts. Nolan baffled his opponents striking out 41 in just 22 IP while walking only 10 and giving up 16 hits. So far this season at Davidson, he has thrown 18 innings and struck out 27 while holding batters to a .221 batting average. To go along with his impressive statistics, Nolan’s pitch metrics measured by Rapsodo and Trackman have been equally impressive. With a fastball up to 93 mph and 20-22” of vertical break the swings and misses have been pouring in. To complement the jumping fastball in the 2400 rpm range, he throws a hard tight slider in the upper 2500 range that is up to 85 mph. When asked about competing in Wilson this summer, Nolan responded with “I’m really excited for this summer in Wilson and to have the opportunity to play against high level competition, looking forward to it and see you soon Tobs Nation!” With command and power, Nolan will be fun to watch late in the ballgame this summer in Wilson.

Our second pitcher being introduced to the Tobs is Will Schomberg. Will is Davisdon’s go-to reliever in his second year with the program and it will also be his second year in the CPL after pitching with the HPT Hi-Toms last summer. Last spring for the Wildcats, Schomberg threw 4 innings in 4 appearances, fanning 8. Once the CPL season got under way in July, Will picked up right where he left off missing barrels on a regular basis. For the Hi-Toms he threw 9 innings in 7 appearances only allowing 5 hits and striking out 12. In this 2021 season for Davidson, Schomberg has continued to dominate out of the bullpen. In his 9 appearances, he has thrown 18 innings, striking out 21, and only allowing 3 extra base hits, keeping hitters at bay with an opponent batting average of .250. Along with his teammates Devos and previously announced returning pitcher Jacob Peaden, Schomberg has been lighting up the metrics as well. This spring, Will has been holding a fastball in the 92-94 mph range with a consistent RPM of 2500 showing lots of late life from a loose arm. Even with a fastball in the low mid 90’s his breaking steals the show spinning at a very impressive high rate of the upper 2900’s to 3000 rpms. This doesn’t come as a surprise after the showing last summer in the Coastal Plain League and being the CPL Trackman Season Leader in spin rate at 3029 RPM. In fact out of the top 5 pitches in thrown 2020 Will owns the 1st , 3rd , and 4th best spin rates at 3029 rpm, 2978 rpm , 2973 rpm with the 2nd best coming from 2020 Wilson Tob and Davidson teammate Alex Fenton at 2995…there must be something in the water in Davidson, North Carolina. Will was asked how it feels to get an opportunity to play with the Wilson Tobs this summer and with some familiar faces. He responded “I’m excited for the opportunity to play with some of my college teammates, while also getting better and winning some baseball games.”
