DENVER – From Sunday to Tuesday, six alumni of the Wilson Tobs were selected in the 2021 MLB Draft by the following organizations: New York Yankees, Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies.

 

Trey Sweeney – New York Yankees (Round 1 | Pick 20)

With the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft, the New York Yankees selected former Wilson Tob Trey Sweeney (Eastern Illinois) on Sunday night.

In 2020, Sweeney led the Tobs with 27 hits in 17 games played. He posted a team high .397 batting average with a .676 slugging percentage. He ended the season leading the team in doubles (7) and was third on the team in home runs (4).

Sweeney was the highest draft pick from the Tobs organization since Justin Verlander was selected no. 2 overall in the 2004 MLB Draft.

 

Jack Schrand – Miami Marlins (Round 9 | Pick 269)

With the 269th overall pick in the ninth round of the 2021 MLB Draft, the Miami Marlins selected former Wilson Tob Jake Schrand (Wright State) on Monday afternoon.

Schrand appeared in five games for Wilson in relief during the 2020 season. In 4.1 innings pitched, he struck out seven batters while posting an 8.31 ERA and recording one save.

 

Austin Vernon – Tampa Bay Rays (Round 10 | Pick 311)

With the 311th overall pick in the tenth round of the 2021 MLB Draft, the Tampa Bay Rays selected former Wilson Tob Austin Vernon (NC Central) on Monday afternoon.

In 2018, Vernon pitched in three games in relief for the Tobs. He posted a 3.38 ERA over 2.2 innings pitched on two strikeouts.

 

Mitch Myers – Oakland Athletics (Round 12 | Pick 368)

With the 368th overall pick in the 12th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, the Oakland Athletics selected former Wilson Tob Mitch Myers (Pittsburgh) on Tuesday afternoon.

Myers made three starts for Wilson on the mound striking out 14 batters in 10.1 innings pitched while posting a 3.48 ERA in 2020.

 

Chris Meyers – Detroit Tigers (Round 13 | Pick 375)

With the 375th overall pick in the 13th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, the Detroit Tigers selected former Tob Chris Meyers (Toledo) on Tuesday afternoon.

In 2020, Meyers played in 18 games for the Tobs and hit .318. He collected 21 hits including three doubles and three homeruns while driving in 15 runs. Meyers finished the season tied for runs scored (20) with current Tob Dusty Baker (Mount Olive).

 

Jared Carr – Philadelphia Phillies (Round 13 | Pick 385)

With the 385th overall pick in the 13th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, the Philadelphia Phillies selected two-year Tob Jared Carr (Shepherd) on Tuesday afternoon.

In his last two years in Wilson, Carr hit .329 in 35 games totaling 47 hits. He scored 33 runs, hit 11 homeruns and drove in 38 runs while stealing 13 bases.

Carr led the Tobs in homeruns (8), RBIs (26) and slugging percentage (.753) while posting the third best batting average on the team (.356) in 2020.

During the 2021 season, Carr hit .343 in 18 games on 24 hits. He hit three homeruns, scored 17 runs and drove in 12 runs.

 

The Wilson Tobs enter their 25th season as a founding member of the Coastal Plain League. The upcoming season for the Tobs will see community outreach, increased participation in helping the less fortunate, a Pettit Cup Championship team, and more exciting entertainment than ever before.
