Wilson, NC – The Wilson Tobs 6th Annual High School Junior Varsity Baseball Classic was another great success for the Tobs, as well as the local community. This event was highlighted with a six games schedule, two on Friday April 13th and four on Saturday April 14th.
The Tobs continued to expand their collection events for the Home Run for Hunger program with the Junior Varsity Baseball Classic. Teams were not charged an entrance fee but instead were asked to bring canned goods to support the cause. Fans that donated canned goods received a discount entry ticket into that day's games, as well as a ticket for the Tobs Home Run for Hunger Celebration on Sunday, June 24th.
Ten different schools, and fans, donated canned goods at this event: DH Conley Freshman, DH Conley (169 – winner), Wake County Home School, Nash Central, Cleveland, CB Aycock, JH Rose, Rosewood, Wayne Country Day, and Cardinal Gibbons. Over 700 canned goods were collected throughout Friday and Saturday during this event.
In baseball action, Friday's opening night saw Wake County Home School defeat DH Conley Freshman in the first game of the Classic 4-2. The second game had the DH Conley Freshman team take down Nash Central for a 6-2 win. The Saturday slate of games started off with powerhouse Cleveland defeating CB Aycock by a score of 12-4. In the second game of the day, JH Rose fell to Rosewood 9-1. The 3rd game featured a stout DH Conley JV defense taking the 10-run rule victory over Wayne Country Day. The final matchup of the Classic saw DH Conley JV pull out an entertaining 5-3 win against Cardinal Gibbons to finish out the weekend's action.
In addition to the canned goods donated by schools and their fans, Food Lion dropped by and donated 1,000 cans of food to help benefit the local community of Wilson. The Food Lion Feeds Program believes that "…no one should have to choose between dinner and rent." They are focused on helping local communities, which is why they have partnered with the Tobs and our effort to help eradicate hunger in our community.
In addition to the Varsity Classic events this past Friday, Gillette Athletic Complex held the Wilson City Little League Opening Day Ceremonies, where each of the teams brought out nonperishable food items as part of our Home Run for Hunger collection. The Little League teams held a competition to see which team would bring out the most items. Joyner's Funeral Home lead the Little League in donations and will be receiving a special prize. With all the teams' efforts the Little League collected and donated over 250 canned goods.
Also, at Gillette Athletic Complex this past weekend was the City of Wilson Soccer Opening Day, where the teams kicked off their season and helped the community of Wilson at the same time. The Wilson Soccer Teams contributed to the overall total collection number from the various food drive events collected this past weekend by collecting over 300 canned goods. This was a huge step in the right direction for the hunger program. The program has made its way into multiple different sports and locations around town.
The Tobs next Home Run for Hunger collection will be the Public School vs Home School Baseball Showdown on Saturday, April 21st at Historic Fleming Stadium. We will be hosting three games starting at 11:00 AM. Following this event, the next collection event will be on May 5th at 217 Brew Works during their Cinco de Mayo Celebration!
