Wilson, NC – This past weekend (April 7-8) saw tremendous success and community service during a multitude of events in the Wilson area. The Wilson Tobs hosted their 5th Annual JV Classic at Fleming Stadium on Friday April, 7th and Saturday April, 8th. In addition to the JV Classic, the Tobs were also involved at the J Burt Gillette Athletic Complex for Little League Baseball Opening Day and a full slate of soccer games.

As a part of the Tobs new Home Run for Hunger Season Campaign, canned goods were collected at these three events, and marked the second collection weekend of the Spring season.

Fans that donated any canned good/s at the Tobs JV Classic received a discounted ticket for entry into that day’s games, as well as a ticket for the Tobs Final Home Run for Hunger Celebration on Sunday, June 25th.

The Wilson Tobs 5th Annual High School Junior Varsity Classic was another great success for the Tobs, as well as the local community. This season’s events were highlighted with six total games, two on Friday evening and four throughout the day on Saturday.

Three different schools, and fans, donated over 100 canned goods each: DH Conley Freshman Team (196), Wake County Home School (190), and CB Aycock (140). The remainder of the collectors included DH Conley JV (65), Southeastern Home School (49), Wayne Country Day (42), Rocky Mount Academy (32), and Nash Central (12). In total 726 canned goods were collected throughout Friday and Saturday during the JV Classic.

In baseball action, Friday’s opening night saw two walk off wins. The Vikings of DH Conley (Freshman) defeated Wake County Home School in the first game of the Classic in walk-off fashion 7-6. Not to be out done, the final game of the evening saw the Cardinals of Southeastern Home School (Wilmington, NC) take down Wayne Country Day 6-5 with a walk-off of their own.

The final slate of games on Saturday saw a lot of action. CB Aycock collected a win over the Rampants of JH Rose in the first game of the day. In the second game of the day, the Warriors of Wake County Home School rebounded from their loss the night before to defeat Rocky Mount Academy.

The final two games of the afternoon saw the DH Conley Freshman team collect their second win of the Classic as they defeated Southeastern Home School 4-3. The final matchup of the 2017 JV Classic saw the Vikings from DH Conley defeat the Nash Central Bulldogs 13-9 to conclude this weekend’s baseball action.

On Saturday, the Gillette Athletic Complex was busy with Little League Opening Day as well as a full slate of soccer games. Canned goods were collected at both events and saw an influx of charitable donations from local families. In total, Wilson Little League teams donated 1,075 canned goods, and soccer teams collected 199 canned goods to be donated to local food shelters/pantries of the local Wilson area.

In total for this weekend’s three events there was one ton of food collected (2,000 cans) to be distributed to help those in need in Wilson.

The final collection event for the Tobs Home Run for Hunger will be a part of the City of Wilson’s Golden Leaf Invitational April 15,17, & 18. Teams participating in the event will be donating canned goods as their entry fee.
