03/27/2017 12:54 PM -

Wilson, NC – The Wilson Tobs 5th Annual High School Varsity Classic was another great success for the Tobs, as well as the local community. This season’s events were highlighted with six total games, two on Friday evening and four throughout the day on Saturday.

A new initiative for the Tobs this season saw the annual Home Run for Hunger event expand into a season long event. The Varsity Classic was the first collection event of the year and saw great success. Fans that donated any canned good/s received $2 off each ticket purchased for entry into that day’s games, as well as a ticket for the Tobs Final Home Run for Hunger Celebration on Sunday, June 25th.

Four different schools, and fans, donated over 100 canned goods each: CB Aycock (180), DH Conley (172), Wake County Home School (115), and Southeastern Home School (105). The remainder of the collectors included Wilson Christian Academy (97), Fike (77), JH Rose (67), Nash Central (65), Greenfield School (21), and North Lenoir (19). In total 883 canned goods were collected throughout Friday and Saturday.

In addition to the canned goods donated by schools and their fans, Food Lion donated 1,500 pounds of food to help benefit the local community of Wilson. The Food Lion Feeds Program believes that “…no one should have to choose between dinner and rent.” They are focused on helping local communities, which is why they have partnered with the Tobs and our effort to help eradicate hunger in our community.

In baseball action, Friday’s opening night saw the Knights of Hickory Christian Academy defeat Greenfield School in the first game of the Classic. The final game of the evening saw North Lenoir take down Southeastern Home School (Wilmington, NC).

The final slate of games on Saturday saw a lot of action. Head Coach Charles Davis of CB Aycock collected his 500th Career Victory in a win over the Cardinals of Southeastern Home School in the first game of the day. In the second game of the day, the hometown Wilson Christian Chargers fell to the visiting Nash Central Bulldogs.

The final two games of the afternoon saw another local high school, Fike, take on JH Rose. In a closely contested matchup the #3 team in the state, JH Rose, defeat the Deamons of Fike. The final matchup of the 2017 Classic saw the Vikings from DH Conley defeat the Wake County Home School Warriors to conclude this weekend’s action.

The Tobs next Home Run for Hunger collection site will be at the Wilson City Little League Highway 264 Challenge this weekend, Friday, March 31st and Saturday, April 1st, as well as the Wilson City Soccer Opening Day, Saturday, April 1st, all located at the Gillette Athletic Complex. Teams and parents are encouraged to donate canned goods, as a competition has been created for the teams. The team with the most donated goods will receive a team prize courtesy of the Wilson Tobs.
